Statistics emphasizes on a proper and precise methodology and is suitable for making and noting assumptions. It cares about how the data was gathered, the resulting features of the estimator or experiment (e.g. p-value, unbiased estimators), and the kinds of features you would assume if you did a procedure many times.

Machine Learning is about prediction as it cares intensely about scalability and using the predictions to make decisions.  Machine Learning is mainly motivated by problems that need to have answers like image recognition, text inference, ranking, computer vision, medical and healthcare, search engines.
