Before learning SQL for Data Science or any other purpose for that matter, most people tend to ignore the fundamental database principles and jump straight into SQL queries. I believe it really helps if at least the following concepts are learned:

• Distinguishing between the different types of keys - super keys, candidate keys, primary keys, etc.
• A sound understanding of Entity-Relationship (ER) modeling and making ER diagrams.
• Knowing the difference between an ER model and a logical model.
