Kali Linux is derived from Debian. It is a Linux distribution developed by a leading data security training organization called Offensive Security. It is mainly designed to perform penetration testing, digital forensics, and security auditing. It contains various tools that are geared towards numerous data security tasks like computer forensics, penetration testing, reverse engineering, and security research. It is entirely free.

Since Kali Linux is designed to meet the needs of the testing professionals, all its documentation has prior knowledge of and is extremely familiar with the Linux operating system.

Some of the most common security tools of Kali include:

  • Armitage
  • Ettercap
  • Kismet
  • Maltego
  • Nmap
  • Metasploit
