I would say a data scientist should learn five languages such as Python, R programming, SQL, NoSQL, and SAS. If interested in learning Big Data Spark, you have to learn Java/Scala also.

The primary language needed for a data scientist is Python because it has an abundant libraries for data analysis, modeling, computer vision, and natural language processing. After that, R is most important because of its good packages for statistical computing, data visualization, and time series forecasting. SQL, and NoSQL to store, manage, retrieve the data from the databases. SAS has equal capabilities as Python and R but it is required because all the banking and finance companies use SAS.
