What are the qualifications to become a data scientist? Any specific education?

Anyone can be a  Data Analyst or a Data Scientist provided they make the effort to acquire the required skills in the domain. 

A Data Analyst is expected to be proficient in:

  • R programming – Analytics tool used for statistics and data modeling 

  • Python – Provides machine learning and visualization libraries such as Scikit-Learn, Matplotlib, Keras, Pandas, TensorFlow, etc. and can be assembled on SQL server, JSON, a MongoDB database, etc.

  • Tableau Public – Connects to data sources like Excel, corporate Data Warehouse, etc. and creates visualizations, dashboards, maps, etc. with real-time updates on the web

  • QlikView – Provides in-memory data processing, data association, and data visualization 

  • SAS – For data manipulation and analytics

  • Microsoft Excel – Tool for data analytics

  • RapidMiner – Can integrate with any data source types for predictive analytics, such as data mining, text analytics, and Machine Learning

  • KNIME – Allows one to analyze and model data and allows visual programming

  • OpenRefine – Data cleaning software 

  • Apache Spark – Large-scale data processing engine, which is also popular for data pipelines and machine learning model development

A Data Scientist should know:

  • Programming: Python or R

  • Big Data Hadoop

  • Machine Learning and AI

  • Statistics

  • Linear Algebra 

  • SQL Database/Coding

  • Apache Spark

  • Multivariable Calculus 

  • Data Visualization
