Discrete vs continuous for dates in Tableau(dimesion vs measure)

Question

I have created a graph to show unemployment with respect to each month

When the date was a dimension I can see a graph displayed like this

When the date was measure the graph seems like this

Can any one explain the difference

It is not in  measure,It is in continuous dimension

In Tableau Measure and Dimension can be Continuous or Discrete. 

Depends upon the data type it will convert
