Can a non-technical person become a data scientist?

Is it necessary to be an engineer or have a programming background to become a data scientist?

 If you want to pursue a career as a data scientist there used to be a requirement for a dedicated skillset like mathematics, statistics, econometrics, and operations research.  as this field requires domain expertise, but now, it is uncommon as there are ample examples of people coming from various other backgrounds, such as biologists, meteorologists, or physicists, making a career in the field of data.
