For data to be classified as Big Data, it needs to satisfy certain criteria. These are known as the 5 Vs of Big Data and are defined as follows:

  • Volume: The data in consideration needs to be of an extremely large volume or size. The actual figures start at terabytes and can go up to petabytes. The phrase ‘Big Data’ has the word ‘big’ in it, which directly alludes to the volume.
  • Velocity: The speed or rate at which the data is being generated and received is also supposed to be really high for the problem to qualify as a Big Data problem. In the real world and real-time applications, data is being constantly fed, and there is ample need for tools to store and process this data efficiently.
  • Variety: The data is almost never homogeneous in nature. This implies that the data in the real world will always come from heterogeneous sources and can be unstructured, semi-structured, or structured in nature.
  • Veracity: The data will always have inconsistencies, errors, missing values, and noise present within it.
  • Value: The data should contain attributes that hold a certain amount of weightage for the data to have some use. For instance, attributes like admission numbers or any random sequence of numeric values don’t hold any value as data attributes.
