Could someone tell me what is partition key in AWS Kinesis?

A partition key is used in AWS Kinesis Data streams, to distribute data across shards. Now, shards are basically throughout the unit of an Amazon Kinesis data stream. Amazon Kinesis Data streams segregate data records into multiple shards using a partition key, associated with each data record. These keys are actually Unicode strings of a maximum length of 256 characters.
