The most common data types supported in Tableau are:

  • Number - Numbers are stored in the cells as an integer or floating point number. You can add a number to any cell with the Add Number tool.

  • Date - Dates can be entered manually or imported from a file or from a URL. Date fields are automatically formatted by default. You can also change a date value's format using the Custom Format option on the Formatting toolbar.

  • Boolean - Boolean values are true or false, and can be set directly in a cell or added as an indicator with the Set Indicator tool.

  • String - Strings are text that you enter in a cell, such as "Sales", "Price" or "Count". You can also import text from Microsoft Excel by dragging and dropping text into your worksheet.
