ETL involves transforming data before it is loaded into a target system, whereas ELT involves loading the data into the target system as is and  then transforming it within the system.  The selection between ETL and ELT is affected by a number of factors, including the number of data sources, the processing capacity of the target system, and the requirements for data transformation.
