I am running an EC2 instance. I want to ping the IP from my local machine, but it is not working? what can i do to rectify this?

You can ping it from your local machine. 

You have to go to your security group of the EC2 instance you created. Then go to inbound rules and click Edit.

Then add a Custom ICMP rule with Protocol as Echo Request. For source, add Anywhere so that you can ping from any machine you want. Check out this screenshot for a better understanding.
