how many fault domains are allowed in azure

I wanted to place my VMs in availability sets. I wanted to know the number of fault domains they are spread across.

Even though the number of fault domains may get increased up to 20, By default 3 fault domains and 5 update domains are laid out by Azure in the availability set.

While distributing, The azure VMs are spread out into three different racks across the data center.
