Could someone tell me what exactly is a SQL injection?

SQL injection is a set of command that a threat agent uses to get the required data from a web application’s database. It works when the threat agent places commands that are not validated by the web application and then it returns with the data that it is not supposed to give unless proper verification is confirmed.
