Can anyone tell me what is hash function in cryptography?

In Cryptography, Hash functions are very important and used in almost all information security applications. A hash function converts a numerical input value which is of arbitrary length into another compressed numerical value which is of fixed length. The output values of a hash function are message digest or simply hash values.
