What is a callout in salesforce

Can anyone help me what is callout? I am not able to understand it.

So, basically an Apex callout helps you to integrate with an external service by calling to an external Web service or sending and accept HTTP request from the Apex code. Apex web services allows an external application to invoke its methods using web services.
