Well, the answer to this query is subjective and depends on individual preferences and professional goals. Let me share some of the points by which you will understand the gist of both domains:

  • Data Science is the trending domain today, no doubt about that, with Harvard Business Review stating Data Scientist as “the sexiest job of 21st century”. If you need to excel in Data Science you need to have a good grip on statistics, math, programming languages like R, Python, database language SQL, Microsoft Excel, and other data visualization software like Tableau or Power BI. This domain is all about data, how to collect it, process it, transform and analyze it to derive key insights to support decision-making the process to improve organizational infrastructure, improve efficiency, and boost the growth, innovation, and profit, etc. Salary wise it offers a good package to the potential candidates. Those who wish to be more exploratory, possess analytical and problem-solving skills could enter this job if you like cleaning a large amount of data, and process them to make reports and uncover hidden trends to empower business operations.
  • Whereas Web development is completely on the creative side, it needs professionals who are experts in certain software like photoshop, languages like, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python Django, etc. This domain is older than the new kid Data Science, and has stood the test of time, and has proved that web development will always be there even if another domain ceases to exist because digital marketing never stops. Web developer could easily find a new job without much effort if he/she is skilled. And even if they don’t find the same type of work, they could jump to mobile application development, etc. Web developers increasingly become both freelancers and full-timers. So, the pay aspect depends on their work and what they did on the website, but they earn a good amount of money. And the work of a web developer is time-taking and laborious than Data Science.

So, it depends on you, what you choose to do for a living, but my suggestion will be never to follow any trend blindly, always analyze your strengths and weaknesses, your likings, and depend on those answers, and always remember that you could reskill or upskill at your wish. One way is to register yourself for a web development course or Data Science courses from Intellipaat, which offers industry-standard courses along with guided projects and exercises to help you gain the necessary practical skills.
