Android is an OS for mobile handsets that may be mobile or laptops, developed by Google and many other tech and hardware companies, (under Open Handset Alliance, 2007). Android is based on Linux Kernel and other open-source software. It cannot be said as Linux based, as it uses only Linux kernel and nothing else, unlike other Linux Distros (Distributions) which uses Linux Kernel and other pieces of software.
