Is Python better than R for data science?

The answer to this question depends.

R is built for data analysis. It is very rich in data analysis, munging and visualization. It has a wide variety of 3rd party packages for lots of things in various domains.

Python is a  general-purpose programming language. It can be applied to various tasks and one of them is data science.

Also, many  R functionalities/packages were getting ported to Python. One well-known package in Python Pandas. This package provides a lot of utilities for data analysis. There many other packages that are ported to Python. If available Python packages are sufficient for your work, you can choose Python over R.
