I believe it mostly depends on the company you work at, and the type of work you want to do. In Linkedin, the data scientist would look for expertise in one of those languages, along with Python, R, etc.  A big part of data science on the product improvement side is essentially software engineering, and being able to create, modify and implement algorithms.
