What is the difference between profiles and permission sets in salesforce?

Can anyone help me where I have to use profiles and where to use permission sets? Any help is appreciated.

So basically, profiles can be used for similar types of users with same permissions. Whereas, permission sets are used for a set of functionality to a user. You can create a permission set and assign it to the users.
