Is it okay for a machine learning beginner to go directly for deep learning?

No, as without having any fundamental  knowledge and understanding, you can't work around Deep Learning on any sort of Data Set.

Before diving straight into deep learning you want to have the  required understanding of basic concepts that are widely used in Deep learning like Basic linear algebra, Calculus, Statistics etc.
