Could someone tell me why is Etcd in Kubernetes?

Etcd, pronounced as “et-cee-dee” is an open-source distributed key-value store, is used by Kubernetes to store all its data, like configuration data, state data, and even metadata. Etcd is a distributed data store and allows nodes in the cluster to read and write.
