What does 'back up' node in Hadoop?

In Hadoop, the backup node is similar to checkpoint node in every way. It expands upon checkpoint node by providing up-to-date in-memory of the file system namespace. This in-memory record of the file system namespace is in synchronization with the active NameNode.
