For beginners, it will be very confusing how to and where to start. There is no absolute path to become a software engineer but I can tell you how the majority of software engineers start.

Firstly, take a bachelor’s degree in computer science where you can learn about programming languages, software development, Data structures, DBMS, Computer Networks, Mathematics, and other related subjects.

Programming is the most important skill for software engineers. No need to know all the programming languages. Start with one programming language like C, Python or C++ and then you can learn other languages easily.

For a software engineer, understanding of data structures concepts are necessary because of these help in solving time and space complexity problems.

Do a few projects using your technical skills and apply for internships. Later, apply for entry-level jobs in the companies.
