According to Forbes, Artificial Intelligence systems can largely be classified into four categories that are listed below:
- Reactive machines are the oldest type of AI machines with comparatively fewer capabilities. They match human intelligence and respond to various situations. One of their limitations is that they do not have the memory-based feature and cannot use past experiences for present situations.
- Limited Memory machines have the abilities of reactive machines with the added advantage of being able to learn from past data to make present and future business decisions. This is the most significant type of AI as most AI systems that are available today come under this category.
- Theory of Mind. This type of AI system only exists in theory so far. It is the next level in AI machines that scientists are currently trying to research on and develop. The aim of these systems is to get a better understanding of the entities that it interacts with in terms of their beliefs, needs, emotions, and thought processes.
- Self-Aware is the final level of AI that, like Theory of Mind, only exists hypothetically. It basically means that the AI systems will be self-aware and it will take a really long time to reach this level of AI.
Alternatively, these systems can be classified into the following three technologies:
- Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)
- Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
- Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)
