Accessing and Updating External Databases From Salesforce

I want to connect my Salesforce with an external database so that I can keep track for updated in real time for both salesforce and database. Can anyone help me with this? How can I able to achieve it?

You can try using Salesforce connect and Heroku Connect.

Salesforce connect - It will help you to connect to various data sources and then it will convert those data sources into an SObject.

Heroku Connect - It will help you to connect your Heroku data source with Salesforce Object. Whereas, the sync may not be an immediate process, but will little customizations it will become "Live" as possible.
