Well, if you have a good hand on some programming language and work on independent machine learning projects I believe that you can be hired on virtue of your programming skills and hands-on experience with machine learning tools.
If you’ll get a “better job” though it is not entirely sure because some web developers make quite a lot here and I don’t think a typical “data scientist” can even expect more money at all. What I have noticed is that unless you did a Ph.D. are hired by a big company that invests more money into AI, or go to a quant fund/quant trading shop, you don’t really get paid more than a software engineer.
