Here are the steps to create donut chart in Tableau:

Step 1: Create a pie chart

  • Open Tableau Desktop. Connect to Superstore sample data.
  • Under Marks, select the Pie mark type.
  • Drag Customer Segment to Color.
  • Drag Sales to Size.
  • Click Label. Select Show mark labels.
  • Resize the pie chart as desired.

Step 2: Switch to the dual-axis chart

  • Drag Number of Records to Rows.
  • Drag Number of Records to Rows again.
  • On Rows, do the right-click on the instances of Number of Records. Then, select Measure (Sum) > Minimum.
  • On Rows, do the right-click for the second instance of Number of Records. Then, select Dual Axis.

Step 3: Modify the second pie chart to a circle

  • In the Marks card, click MIN(Number of Records) (2).
  • Remove Customer Segment from Color.
  • Remove Sales from Size.
  • Click Color. Choose the same color as the background. In this example, click white.
  • Click Size. Drag the slider to the left to change the circle smaller.
