Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech

The candidates should have completed their B.Tech/BE degree with a minimum aggregate of 60%. Most of the prestigious colleges conduct entrance exams for this course. The most popular entrance exam is GATE.

Apart from these requirements, some of the best colleges, such as BITS Pilani and IIT Kharagpur, may require prior work experience. Having work experience may act as a plus and give you an edge over your competitors, but it’s not mandatory.

Entrance Exams for M.Tech Admission

There are a number of entrance exams for admission at different institutes all over India. All these tests have different eligibility criteria and patterns. Some of these are state-level exams, and others are national-level exams. Common entrance exams that are conducted in India are listed below:

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE): This is a national-level exam that is conducted by the GATE Committee, which comprises faculty members from IISc and IITs. Some colleges that accept GATE scores for admission include IITs and NITs,  BITS Pilani, MNNIT Allahabad, MNIT Jaipur, IIEST Shibpur, and AMU Aligarh. The eligibility criteria for this exam are as follows:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of 60% (or equivalent) marks in their bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering.
  • There is no upper age limit to be eligible to appear in GATE.
  • Along with Indian citizens, residents of Nepal, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates are also eligible to appear in this test.

Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET): Unlike GATE, this entrance exam is accepted in colleges across Tamil Nadu only. It is conducted by ANNA University. The eligibility criteria for this exam are given below:

  • Candidates should have completed their bachelor’s with at least 50% marks (45% in the case of reserved category candidates). 
  • Those who have a B.E. or B.Tech. degree are eligible to apply for this course.

Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE): This is also a state-level entrance exam administered by the Odisha State Technical Education Society. This test makes you eligible for admission to colleges across Odisha. The eligibility criteria for this exam are as follows:

  • The applicants should have scored a minimum of 50% aggregate or above in graduation from the relevant discipline.
  • There is no maximum age limit for admission to M.Tech

Telangana State Post Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test (TS PGECET): This exam is conducted by the Telangana State Council of Higher Education for admission to M.Tech in colleges across Telangana. Candidates who fulfill the following eligibility criteria can apply for this course.

  • The candidate should be a resident of Telangana
  • Must have completed a bachelor’s degree (BTech/BE) with a minimum aggregate score of 50%.
