What's the u prefix in a python string ?

In the above code, whether that 'u' indicates "Unicode"? Am I right?

See, 3.1.3. Unicode Strings 

It has been the syntax since Python 2.0 version

But Python 3 made it unnecessary, as Unicode is the default string type.
