What does a bad data scientist do?

How can one go wrong in his preparation to become a data scientist?

Every company has a different value for particular skills and tools. So, Data Scientists may not necessarily be bad, but just more competent in other skills than one. However, let’s take a look at what may label a Data Scientist as being a bad one:

• Not a team player (and this goes for most job roles) - Data Scientists are expected to work well in a team as well as communicate with major stakeholders to present their findings and propose decisions to other team leaders.  

• Poor mathematical background - Mathematical knowledge is crucial to Data Science and Data Scientists should be well-versed in algorithms and tools.

• Poor computing knowledge - Strong computer skills are important to calculate and present information. 

• Poor communication skills - A Data Scientist has to present their findings clearly and effectively to the team and stakeholders. 

• Zero business knowledge - Data Scientists should be aware of the world of business in the context that they will be working to solve a business’s problems

• No knowledge about tools - Data Scientists work with an arsenal of tools to collate, analyze, and present information and must have knowledge of these popular tools.

• Unwilling to take risks - A lot of Data Science projects fail but that doesn’t mean that Data Scientists don’t take risks to analyze data and dig into the code.

• Unwilling to learn - No Data Scientist is a master of all skills in the domain. But, it shouldn’t stop one from the willingness and curiosity to learn

Again, these are not the shortcomings of a bad Data Scientists but, just a few of the areas that a Data Scientist should be willing to work on and practice to get better.
