Could someone tell me what is Amazon Machine Image (AMI)?

Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is the master image that provides all the information that is required to launch an instance. The rule is that while you launch an instance, you need to state an AMI. When you need multiple instances with the same configurations, you could do that from a single AMI, but if you need multiple instances with different configurations, then you need multiple AMI’s too.

An AMI has a template for the root volume that is required for a particular instance type. For example, an AMI contains an operating system, an application server, and applications.
