The exact reason only the people of GitHub can tell but according to me the reasons that I can think of are as follows:-

  • May be they need the capital to scale a sales force, enterprise support with regional offices and so on, they wanted to compete better with Atlassian, Microsoft, Perforce, etc.with their current products.

  • Maybe they wanted to expand their product which they are offering in software development. There are many products which Atlassian has which GitHub doesn't have. They wanted either to develop these things or buy out small companies that offer them. If you are an absolute beginner or you have a little knowledge of GitHub in that case to learn GitHub and all its concepts such as pull request or creating a repository in detail which is necessary for a programmer you can learn it by taking up the GitHub training course. If you like to read then you can have a look at the GitHub tutorial. If you want to learn it by watching the video tutorial then you can have a look at the following tutorial:-

  • Maybe GitHub wanted to expand to be a broader to a tech giant. And this is obvious they could do this in quite a few directions. They can buy a Heroku-like company or a Cloud 9 IDE-like company and integrate it all together to make a new product based on GitHub but they will be accessible to the general user.

  • It may be possible that one of the founders wants to exit. GitHub is fairly old company if you are a founding type then it worth quite a lot, the owners may want to realise that as capital to do something else with it.
