R and Python are the two current and demanding programming languages used for data science.  R will always be used by the people that are serious about using the most powerful thing that is Ph.D.  Python makes data tools more accessible to everyone, but it just might not be an optimal way to solve a problem.  Most people don't need optimal solutions, Python will go mainstream for data analysis. Different programming languages are good at different things and that is a sure thing.

Mainstream users aren't involved in building an analysis system that is the most robust, fastest and most powerful.  They just want an answer to their question. Python is a great, accessible/easy, and generally fast enough way to get that.
