Big Data is a set of a massive amount of complex data that cannot be easily processed by using old data processing applications. It is not possible to store them in conventional database management systems. It has three properties:

  • Volume: The data volume is extremely large. It is not possible for a single machine to process data of this volume.
  • Velocity: The data arrives at a high speed like the continuous streaming of data from any sensor.
  • Variety: It consists of various types of data like unstructured, semi-structured, and structured.

Hadoop, on the other hand, is an open-source framework based on Google’s MapReduce. It is used to process and handle Big Data. In this framework, the application is broken into many parts that run on various nodes in a system cluster. It allows users to process Big Data with the help of a cluster of various computing systems. It consists of a number of applications like Hadoop MapReduce, Hadoop Kernel, and Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS).
