In cryptography, a key is a string of characters that is applied using an algorithm to convert a string or block of unencrypted data to encrypted data, or vice-versa.

A cryptographic key is just like a physical key. This locks (encrypts) the information so that only those particular people with the right key can unlock (decrypt) the information.
