1. Mental Health

Social media has taken a toll on the mental health of people. Excessive use of social media has led to depression and anxiety because of unkind comments, being subjected to judgment, and having to face trolls. People have the liberty to be faceless and still make inappropriate statements and hamper or shake someone’s self-esteem.

2. Degrading Relationships

People have become so much involved in social media that nowadays people talk more via social media than in person. Most people are always on their phones which has led to minimal conversations between friends and family. People are now so consumed with social media that they have lost interest in interacting or sharing their feelings with each other.

3. Infinite Scrolling

Social Media has also become a major addiction. Because of its algorithm, apps like Instagram keep showing you connected to content that you cannot help but keep watching. This leads to a huge waste of time as people end up spending hours on these apps. Infinite Scrolling is something that has become a major concern for most people.

4. Rat race

The followers and views of the game have got on the heads of people so much that people are invested in it day and night. Everyone wants to be better than someone and get more reach. This has led to people following trends and making videos only with the perspective of making it viral.

5. Spread of wrong information

Social Media as we all know is a great platform for spreading information. But, it means it is an easy way to spread fake information as well. Any news spreads instantly on social media which can lead to the degradation of someone’s personal or brand image. It can also cause panic among people and influence them negatively.

6. Cyber Crimes and Privacy Concerns

We share our information and insights into our daily lives on social media so that our friends, followers, and fans can engage with us. But this can lead to unauthorized use of our personal data, morphing and misuse of it. This has led to the growth of cyber crimes, cyberbullying, and cyber threats.

7. Shortened Attention Spans

Platforms like Instagram have significantly reduced the attention spans of people by introducing reels and shorts. People are now used to watching videos of smaller lengths because their attention span has reduced. This affects their mental health and behavior as well causing impatience.

8. Negative impact on relationships

Excessive use of social media has decreased face-to-face conversations. This has started creating disharmony in personal relations and has started resulting in conflicts. At times, people are engrossed in their phones, even at the dinner table or during some family gatherings.
Children are so lost in social media these days that they do not want to do much verbal communication with their friends and families.

9. Disturbed Sleep

Social Media has induced sleep issues in people. The blue light emitted by the screens is damaging to the eyes and delays sleep time due to being caught in the loop. This disrupts sleep patterns and causes various mental and physical health issues.

You might also see celebrities and influencers living a wonderful life and feel left out. This might also trigger the feeling that you are doing nothing worthwhile and just being wasted. This will result in anxiety and depression, affecting your overall health and well-being.

11. Procrastination

Social Media addiction can get so overpowering sometimes that it might disrupt your daily schedule. This will reduce focus on important tasks and result in procrastination. People get into the loop of infinite scrolling decreasing their work efficiency.

At times we might just be consuming one content after the other, taking ideas from them. However, ultimately we might end up procrastinating and not doing anything.

12. Hate Speech and Trolling

Social Media has also given people the liberty to insult, judge, and shame people. This has given so much power to people to make or break someone’s image. On one side, we see people becoming celebrities overnight; on the other hand, some people get ruthlessly trolled. This trolling can impact their mental health so much that it might result in feelings of worthlessness, degrading of self-belief, and developing a feeling of shame.

Hate comments, which include personal remarks and abusive language can also cause major disappointment, hurt, and depression.

Duality of Social Media

We are living in a world of duality and here everything has a good and bad side. But it’s our responsibility to acknowledge its downsides and use it for our betterment. Let’s understand how we can use this tool responsibly.

  • Social media detoxification is a thing that a lot of people follow to detach and rejuvenate. This helps them get out of the rat race and the real world and prioritize their mental health and things in the real world.
  • It is also essential that we do not get taken away by social media so much that we base our wins and losses on it completely.
  • We must use social media to help ourselves and others. Share things that create a good impact on others.
