Expert Systems and Intelligent Agents are not considered to be a part of the Artificial intelligence domain. AI is mostly concerned with the ability of a machine to perform tasks that are associated with intelligence and/or try to replicate human activities. Expert systems work based on the emulation of the decision-making ability of a human expert. These experts create a knowledge base that the system can use to learn and apply certain rules based off on that. These expert systems have a variety of characteristics - everything from high performance, good reliability, high responsiveness, and even provision of high levels of understandability. Also, the components such as the knowledge base, inference engine, and the user interface are what sets Expert systems part from the general field of AI.
