What is ARN
Updated on 02nd Mar, 23 245 Views

Depending on the AWS cloud service in use, an ARN follows one of several broad naming standards. Namespaces are individual pieces of the ARN syntax, and users must input the right namespace to generate a functional ARN.

What is ARN in AWS?

AWS ARN (Amazon Resource Name) is a type of unique identifier for AWS resources. Everything that you create in AWS has an ARN linked to it. When you need to specify a resource explicitly throughout AWS, such as in IAM policies, Amazon RDS tags, or API requests, we require an ARN.

AWS ARN Format

AWS ARN Format

Let’s try to understand each term individually:

  • Partition – Partition reflects the AWS region to which ARN is linked, there are possible region groups. “ aws, aws-cn, aws-us-gov”, for most of the time you will be using ARNs with aws value.
  • Service – As displayed in the image above, DynamoDB is used in the service category, basically, the kind of service you implement will be reflected there. If you use Lambda, it would become lambda.
  • Region – Suppose the service to which ARN is assigned was created in the US, then us will appear in ARN address, there are multiple AWS regions across the world. Also, keep in mind that a lambda service created in us-east-1 will only exist in that particular region, not others.
  • Account ID – Every AWS user has an account id, which is a 12-digit number to uniquely identify an account.
  • Resource Type – This is an optional field, based on the type of resources created it may or may not exist.
  • Resource ID – The lowest level resource comes in resource ID, in the above example DynamoDB table name is represented in it i.e, –Countries.

Benefits of AWS ARN

Benefits of AWS ARN

AWS ARNs are used in the following:

Administrative Control

ARNs are primarily used by administrators to track and make use of AWS policies and resources throughout each request for AWS Services and Application Programming interface.

Amazon Relational Database

AWS RDS aids in the configuration, operation, and growth of relational databases in data clouds, as well as the development of data management skills. When used in collaboration with AWS ARN, it increases efficiency and produces better outcomes.

Application Interference Requests

When two applications communicate with each other they make use of APIs.

The majority of these operations take place between internet servers and applications.

The AWS ARN streamlines such operations since it concentrates on helping AWS users find and use the resources; as a result, API calls are processed rapidly, leading to increased efficiency.

AWS IAM Policies

The majority of AWS IAM policies rely on ARNs. They are used by users when they carry out the fundamental security procedures for AWS IAM policies and permissions.

They offer restricted hierarchical resource access in IAM policies.

In order to increase the security and access of their systems, AWS users can also make use of IAM permissions, which are set up to prevent users from accessing all resources rather than just certain ones.

Role-Based Authentication With Different Servers

For other AWS customers who want AWS access permissions from an Independent server, AWS ARN can help in the creation of role-based access with specified regulations.

Instead of modifying them, you can restrict their role to read-only.

It enhances the security of our data kept in the central storage and generates temporary credentials for AWS users accessing various servers for short-term use.

ARN Paths

Paths can also be connected with ARNs to capture numerous AWS resources.

For example, you could use the following form to grant a user IAM permissions to read and view files exclusively in a certain S3 bucket while working with an S3 bucket:

Assigning permissions becomes much easier with this feature. We can simply use paths and wildcards ( * in this case ) to indicate all objects instead of creating multiple policies for each object.

What is Amazon S3 ARN?

Amazon S3 is the main storage service for string and quickly recovering data by AWS. Almost every sort of data can be stored in their buckets.

User ID, partition, and service are all included in its ARN, although region and namespace can be quickly skipped.

AWS Services that Work With ARN

AWS Services that Work With ARN

Amazon RDS:

AWS RDS is specially designed to simplify the formatting, function, and space of the relational database of applications stored in AWS clouds.

It automatically secures your data with many of its recovery and backup features.

It can also be used for enhancing the application performance by patching, monitoring, and creating alerts in case any issue erupts.

Being compatible with multiple search engines, AWS RDS can help in improving the development, execution, and deployment cycle of applications.

You can easily make an ARN format for AWS RDS using AWS ARN.

Amazon Lambda:

AWS Lambda is a serverless object-oriented web service for checking and processing app functions as per code provided by the developer.

It supports multiple programming languages, you can run your application by just uploading codes without requiring any administrative access.

ARNs can be efficiently used in AWS Lambda for performing app execution, monitoring, checking security, and scaling purposes.

Amazon IAM:

IAM is an essential AWS service developed by Amazon to ensure that only authorized users can access AWS resources.

The first person to grant access is known as the root user.

AWS IAM can help password-protect all the resources and only users with permission can access them.

Its rules are mostly based on ARNs, and users in IAM use ARNs while performing the basic security measures for AWS IAM policies and permissions.

Amazon Cloudwatch:

AWS Cloudwatch is used for monitoring cloud resources and applications.

It provides useful insights that can help users to improve the performance and features of their applications on AWS.

Additionally, it gives a thorough overview of the apps, resources, and logs used by their organization both on AWS and locally.

When users need to keep track of the health of their resources and the performance of their apps, they can effectively use ARNs in Amazon Cloudwatch.

Amazon SageMaker:

AWS SageMaker can help you use machine learning for developing, training, and organizing applications quickly.

It helps in improving the intelligence of the applications which results in the effective detection of any issue and sending alerts to users.

When users wish to enhance their apps and assign machine intelligence to take speedier and more precise action during execution, they can effectively use ARNs in Amazon SageMaker.

ARNs, or Amazon Resource Names, are one-of-a-kind strings that identify an AWS resource or a set of AWS resources through a path.

They are common across AWS, therefore it’s essential to know what they are and how they operate. After they are created, ARNs cannot be changed.

They are frequently found on the AWS resource’s home page or in the “Additional Settings” pages.
